Jannik Sinner's Wimbledon campaign got off to a rocky start as he suffered a bloodied foot injury during his opening match.

What happened?

The Italian tennis star was competing against Miomir Kecmanovic on the first day of the Championships.

Sinner dropped the opening set to Kecmanovic, having lost his serve in the ninth game.

Why it matters for Jannik Sinner

He rallied and bounced back with a comfortable-enough second-set win, but things took a turn for the worse in the third set.

With the set levelled at two games each, Sinner lost his footing and collapsed to the floor, causing a painful fall.

What comes next?

The television cameras then spotted what looked to be a bleed underneath his trainer, with blood seeping through the mesh lining, leaving BBC commentator Andrew Castle to react in shock.

Castle said: "It looks like his right foot is bleeding, although he's not making any sort of fuss."

Tim Henman added: "I don't think it's strawberries."

Sinner's injury worry was in keeping with the opening day at Wimbledon, given several high-profile names pulled out with problems.

The two biggest withdrawals just happened to be Brits, with Emma Raducanu having withdrawn on the eve of the tournament, while Jack Draper pulled out earlier on Monday.

Raducanu had been coy about her fitness status during the build-up to Wimbledon, and had looked set to feature in Monday's round one matches.

She ultimately believed it wasn't worth the risk, saying: “I’ve done everything possible to try to get to the start line tomorrow but after a final scan tonight, the niggle I’ve been managing has developed into a stress fracture and I’ve been medically advised to stop pushing through."

Draper's 2026 so far has been blighted with fitness problems, with the former US Open semi-finalist remarking: "I'm devastated to share that I have had to withdraw from my first round match due to a recurrence of my arm injury."

Sinner didn't look comfortable on the court and was hobbling around, but he continued to play on.

The injury is a concern for Sinner, who was knocked out of the French Open in the second round.

He will be hoping to recover quickly and get back to his best form as the tournament progresses.

The incident occurred on the first day of the Wimbledon Championships, and Sinner's fans will be eagerly waiting to see how he recovers from the injury.

Sinner's movement wasn't affected by the injury, but it was clear that he was in pain.

The BBC commentators were shocked by the sight of Sinner's bloodied foot, and it will be interesting to see how he copes with the injury in the coming days.

Sinner's opening match against Kecmanovic was a closely contested one, with the Italian ultimately emerging victorious.

The win will be a relief for Sinner, but the injury will be a concern as he looks to progress in the tournament.
